You Can’t Build What You Can’t See

If you can’t picture it, you can’t build it - whether it’s a product, a team, or a culture.

I was talking with Rebecca Mauzy, a senior product developer working with us through Harvard’s Foundry at The Institute of Quantitative Social Science, and she shared a moment that changed how she manages forever.

Her coach told her: first, you have to paint the picture of success for your team.

Then, co-create a contract to bring it to life - timeline, resources, expectations.

That clarity changed everything.

And it reminded me how similar that is to the work we do at Groops.

Why Mental Models Matter More Than Ever?

Leadership is a creative act.
You can’t create what you haven’t imagined.
And your team can’t deliver what they can’t see.

Too often, leaders expect output without offering a mental model of success. It’s not just unfair - it’s ineffective. People need to see it to bring it to life.

This is true in startups.
It’s true in coaching.
And it’s true in life.

When you shift your role from task-master to vision-caster, your team starts owning the how. You focus on the what. And that’s where trust, innovation, and performance grow.

You, as a manager, have to paint the picture of success for your team. Without that clarity, the team can’t be expected to deliver what’s needed.
— Rebecca Mauzy

What Happens if We Forget?

We’re at a pivotal moment in the future of work.
Leaders are stretched. Teams are distributed. Expectations are sky high.

Without a shared picture of success, people fill in the blanks - or just check out.

Misalignment becomes the norm.

Micromanagement creeps in.

And performance suffers.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.
What if every manager was trained to lead with clarity?
To paint the picture, set the vision, and let go of the rest?

Groops Take

We believe clarity is one of the most undervalued leadership tools out there.

Most managers weren’t trained to lead.
They were promoted for being good at the work - not guiding others to do it.
So it’s no wonder many default to micromanaging or unclear expectations.

At Groops, we help leaders step into a new model:
One where they visualize the future.
Communicate it clearly.
Co-create the roadmap with their team.

That’s when people feel trusted.
That’s when they perform.
That’s when cohesion - and results - start to build.

Why It Matters

Leaders need more than tactical skills.
They need psychological tools.
Tools to see clearly, connect deeply, and lead with intention.

A good leader is someone who can help people see the invisible and believe in the incredible.
— Simon Sinek, leadership expert and author

Something to Try: Recommit to Human Connection

Want to lead with more clarity this week? Here’s a quick exercise:

  1. Picture your ideal outcome for your team this quarter.

  2. Write it out in one paragraph. Be specific, not fluffy.

  3. Now, ask yourself: Have I shared this? Have I asked my team what they need to get there?

Then, take it to your next team meeting:

  • Share your vision.

  • Ask what’s missing.

  • Align on expectations, resources, and timing.

It’s a simple shift.
But it builds clarity, trust, and ownership - fast.
You can’t build what you can’t see.
So make it visible.
